Tips For Long Distance Grandparents

Tips For Long Distance Grandparents

by Veronica Scott  |  April 13, 2009

There is no question that grandparents play a very special role in the lives of future generations. It's special to be a part of your grandchild's life, watching as they grow up into adulthood. It can be understandably difficult for those grandparents that do not live near their grandchildren. Long distance grandparents are certainly no less special but it does require more work and dedication to keep in touch with your grandchild, relating and communicating.

The wonders of technology make it easy to stay in touch now across the distance. Nothing can keep you from connecting with your loved ones with such innovations as the internet. Stay in touch through instant messaging where you can use a webcam to see one another. Hands free options make it easy to talk instead of typing so it's great for even the youngest of children. Even holidays can be extra special when you can watch them open their gifts from across any distance, even the ocean. Webcams are relatively inexpensive now if you don't opt for a high end model. It's worth the investment.

One of the greatest things about grandchildren is the wonderful gifts they give you, made by their own small hands. Have them send you some of the lovely crafts they work on at home. Then take a picture of that craft displayed in your home and send it to them so they will be delighted. It's a great way to form and maintain those essential bonds that you may otherwise miss.

If you know that you will be coming for a visit soon or that your grandchildren will be coming to visit you, get them excited by planning the visit together. Call them up and discuss all of the things that you will see and do together. Have them make a list of the things they want to do during your visit and colour or decorate it.

Try finding a game site online that you can both play together from your own homes. Kids will find it great fun to be able to play with Grandma or Grandpa while so far apart. There are so many fabulous ways to make the internet work for you and assist your long distance relationship with family. Maintaining a presence in their life is important so put in that effort to reach them no matter what. Obstacles are just challenges to be overcome.

Try seeking out a helpful site like FamBooks.com/grandparenting. There you can find a load of great ideas for being a long distance grandparent. You can even sign up for their weekly email listing and receive tips and ideas in your inbox regularly. Online support forums and communities may provide some valuable advice as well.

Getting one on one time with your grandkids is important. Try organizing a holiday where you can stay with the kids while their parents go away for some much needed time out. This is really great if you only see the family once a year. You want to make the most of the time you have together.
