The Greatest Habit of Your Life

The Greatest Habit of Your Life

by Dr. Mike Smalley  |  November 13, 2008

“People don’t decide their future. They decide their habits... and their habits decide their future.” I still remember the impact this Wisdom Key had on my life when my mentor shared it with me for the first time. Successful men and women of the past and present always link their success to the positive daily habits they established. King Solomon was correct when he declared 4000 years ago, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.” Every success law in the universe can be traced back to the writings of Holy Scripture! The Bible is truly the greatest success manual on the earth! I believe the greatest habit in life is reading or listening to the Scriptures every day. What you hear and keep hearing determines what you believe. What you believe decides how you think. Your thoughts always decide your present feelings. Your feelings are the springboard for your every action. One of Christianity’s major contributions to the earth is the preservation, promotion and proclamation of the Bible. The Bible remains the earth’s #1 best seller . . . for a reason!

6 Benefits The Word Of God Can Bring To Your Life

  1. Meditating On God’s Word Brings Prosperity In Every Thing You Do. “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners, Nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night… and whatever he does shall prosper.” (Psalms 1:2-3)
  2. The Word of God Unlocks Faith. “Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God.” (Romans 10:17) Notice the Bible says “faith comes by hearing” not from “having heard.” Daily reading aloud of the Word of God unleashes an explosion of faith in our inner man. God’s Word energizes us and renews our mind. Your mind is a magnet drawing into it everything that is vile and negative. Christianity considers the Bible a spiritual shower that flushes, cleanses, and purifies you with every verse.
  3. The Word of God Overcomes Depression. One of the major benefits of daily listening and reading the Word of God aloud is its ability to break depression off of our mind, spirit, and emotions. Jesus said, “These things I have spoken to you that my joy might remain in you and that your joy may be full.” (John 15:11)
  4. The Word of God Reminds Us Our Tomorrow Can Be Better Than Yesterday. Jesus said, “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)
  5. The Word of God Produces Emotional Peace. “Great peace have those who love Your law, And nothing causes them to stumble.” (Psalms 119:165)
  6. The Word Of God Teaches Us How To Talk Concerning Our Dreams And Goals. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” (Proverbs 18:21)

5 Steps To Getting The Most Of Your Daily Bible Habit

  1. Read At The Same Time Each Day. Psychologists have said for years that anything done 21 days in a row becomes a habit.
  2. Read A Translation That You Enjoy. You will only return daily to a place of pleasure.
  3. Set Reasonable Goals. Followers of Christianity know when goals are set too high, we become overwhelmed by the guilt of not completing the unreasonable goal. Don’t set a goal to read five chapters a day until you master the habit of reading one.
  4. Prepare For Major Distractions During Your Time In God’s Word. Many report their decision to spend time daily in God’s Word results in an unexpected amount of interruptions and distractions. Knowing this in advance should birth in you a passionate determination to let nothing distract you from the Greatest Habit Of Your Life.
  5. Purchase The Bible On CD Or Mp3 And Listen To It Daily. We are the only generation since Adam and Eve where technology in numerous forms makes listening to the Scriptures so accessible. “For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required.” (Luke 12:48) Knowing the Bible declares faith is obtained by hearing the Word of God, common sense demands we take advantage of the major opportunity our generation has been given.

The Bible IS the Greatest Habit
What a great piece by Dr. Smalley.  Psalms are my favorite "turn to" book in the Bible when I need direction.  I may not always know what direction, but Psalms always puts me on course.  I am getting to know the great book much better after attending a women's retreat and then spending 12 intense weeks with Bible study and shared experiences of others and my own.  I especially like the suggestion of the Bible on CD. God Bless.
